New Student Info for Staff

Summary

New students are advised to complete three main steps prior to enrolling in classes for fall. While they receive this message in multiple forms, a summary can be found on the New Student page of the Registrar website.

Timeline

Below are key deadlines and events related to new student enrollment and on-boarding from May – June.

Operational Changes

Below are key operational details related to new student enrollment. Be attentive to more detailed communications about each of these initiatives/changes.

  • Pre-Enrollment
    Many first year students will be administratively enrolled (pre-enrolled) into Math and Writing classes. In addition, students participating in the SWIFT program will be pre-enrolled into their entire fall schedule. For details, please review the Pre-Enrollment page for staff. 
  • Summer Programming (Early Start + More)
    • Early Start courses will be offered to local matriculated students placed in Category 3 or 4 in English Comp/Writing or Math
    • Course offerings include MATH 105, UNIV 101B, GEW 101A
    • Students who express interest in Early Start will be administratively enrolled in June
    • Students in the SWIFT program will be administratively enrolled in PH 180-1
  • GEW 102C Pilot
    • A new 4-unit course, GEW 102C, will be offered this fall to students placed into Category 3 for Eng Com/Written Comm.
    • Selected students will be pre-enrolled in the course; it fulfills Area 1A
    • The degree planner will not recommend GEW 102C; category 3 students not enrolled in GEW 102C will see GEW 101A recommended in the degree planner
    • Directed Self Placement (DSP) will not be used this summer 
  • First Year Seminar (FYS) Requirement
    • New First Year Seminar university requirement, effective Fall 2026 
    • FYS is mandatory, but flexible in how it is fulfilled
    • Transfer students are not required to complete the FYS requirement 
    • UNIV 101B is the default course approved to fulfill the requirement
    • Additional major-specific courses may be recommended in the degree planner to support correct placement, but all approved FYS courses will fulfill the requirement
