Student Concern About Class

If a student has some concerns about their academic progress or experience in a class, the expectation is that the student will visit the faculty member in office hours to discuss their concerns. It may feel a little stressful to address concerns with the faculty member, but faculty members offer office hours each week to provide for timely, one-on-one conversations about questions and concerns students might have.  Addressing questions about their academic work is a fundamental part of the student academic journey, and it鈥檚 important to practice addressing academic concerns promptly and constructively.

  1. Visit faculty office hours. Prepare for the meeting by reviewing the syllabus carefully and bring a concise list of points you wish to address.

If for some reason the faculty member is not reachable (such as during the summer, if they are on leave or are not scheduled to teach), or if you do not feel comfortable contacting the faculty member in office hours, then contact the Department Chair directly.

  2. If the issue was not resolved with the faculty member, then the next step is to request a meeting with the Chair of the Department, or the Director of the Program, that offers your class. To request a meeting, send an email, including the following:
  • Student name, student ID number, and the course title, course number and section, and the name of the instructor.
  • A detailed, concise description of the situation.
  • Whether the student has met with the instructor (include any email/message with the instructor).
  • The course syllabus
  1. If after meeting with the Department Chair or Program Director, you feel the issue is not resolved, then request a meeting with Associate Dean Carmen Nava as above in the email. Provide the same information as above.

Because of confidentiality policies, individual students may address their individual concerns but not the concerns of other students. Any student is welcome to address their individual concerns as recommended above.
