Dean's List

Dean's List Students

What is The Dean's List?

Each semester, the university recognizes undergraduate students who attain a certain level of academic achievement, which is measured in terms of the course grades they earn in fall semester or spring semester. The requirements are that at the conclusion of a semester, the student shall have completed a minimum of 12 units of graded Cal State San Marcos coursework (A, B, C, D, F) during that semester with a grad point average of at least 3.50 . After course grades are posted each fall and spring semester, students will find their course grades and the Dean鈥檚 List honors listed in their transcript. The University Registrar then provides each college Dean with a list of students who met the requirements for the semester in question and have a major in that college. This is where the term 鈥淒ean鈥檚 List鈥 comes from.

Dean's List Letter

For Fall, students can expect to receive their letters no later than February. For Spring, students can expect to receive their letters no later than July. Letters are sent to student鈥檚 糖心原创 email address on file with Enrollment Management Services.

If you do not receive your Dean鈥檚 List letter and you believe you have met the above criteria, please contact Matthew Markin (mmarkin@csusm.edu). Your request must include the semester of eligibility, student ID number, and contact information: full name, email address and telephone.

Dean's List Mixer

Each fall and spring semester, Dr. Liora Gubkin, Dean of the College of Humanities, Arts, Behavioral and Social Sciences, invites Dean鈥檚 List students to attend an informal celebration in the Dean鈥檚 Suite. Light refreshments are served and it鈥檚 a great opportunity for photos and networking.

CHABSS hosts several different mixers and invites each student to attend one. Because there are typically more than 2,000 students who receive this honor, and because of limited space, the mixer is limited to student honorees only. Each year, we hear from students how meaningful it is to attend and celebrate in person.

Helpful Hints:

List Your Honors on your Resume!

Earning this academic honor is significant because it demonstrates your commitment and success in this part of your academic journey. We encourage students to list the Dean鈥檚 List honor on their resume so that this important information is visible when students apply for jobs, internships, scholarships, etc.

Participate in Academic Conversations!

When you receive the invitation, respond immediately to the RSVP and carefully mark your calendar. These events are informal, but you will have the opportunity to meet the Dean and Associate Deans. Feel free to practice talking about your study techniques, academic interests, and future goals. Talking in person about your academic journey helps make connections with others and can help you later when you need to write about your goals and interests on applications for scholarships or jobs.

The Academic Journey

Earning strong grades is one indicator of student success, but it鈥檚 not the only one. We always want to encourage students to work hard and focus on their studies so they deeply engage in the transformational educational experience unique to the university. We understand it鈥檚 a process and takes a lot of hard work. Sometimes students are able to sustain their GPA and graduate with Latin Honors. However, sometimes other life commitments or challenges get in the way. Please talk with your faculty about your academic goals and seek out the support of faculty, student peers and support staff when things get challenging.
