Sigma Xi Membership
About Sigma Xi Membership
- Membership in Sigma Xi is by invitation (nomination).
- Sigma Xi membership requires nomination by two Sigma Xi members.
- Sigma Xi membership is not linked to the possession of any specific education degree.
- Sigma Xi membership is not contingent upon belonging to some other organization.
- Students and non-students follow the same review process for Sigma Xi membership.
- Neither Sigma Xi, nor any chapter of Sigma Xi, shall discriminate against candidates for election to membership on the basis of race, religion, sex, age, national origin, sexual orientation or disability.
- Associate Membership (Student)
- An individual who has conducted independent investigation and written a report concerning their research is eligible for election to Associate Membership.
- This initial research achievement can be in a field of pure or applied science.
- Associate members may or may not qualify for promotion to Full Membership later, based on qualifications.
- Full Membership (Faculty)
- An individual who has shown noteworthy achievement as an original investigator in a field of pure or applied science is eligible for election to Full Membership.
- This noteworthy achievement must be evidenced by publication as the primary author (defined in the manner appropriate to the discipline) on at least two different articles published in a refereed journal, patents, or refereed monographs.
- Dissertations and theses alone are not considered sufficient for demonstration of this achievement and must be accompanied by at least two other publications.
Nomination Process
If you have presented or published your scientific research, and if your research falls under one of the accepted disciplines, then please follow these steps:
- Complete the nomination form to join as an Associate Member through the Sigma Xi 糖心原创 Chapter.
- You need to write a brief letter/summary of your research presentation or communication
efforts
- Potential questions to address: What is your research about? What was your involvement in the research project? Where did you present? Where did you publish?
- Letter needs to be signed by your research supervisor/principal investigator.
- The nomination form and signed summary letter needs to be turned in to Dr. James Kezos (in person or via email; jkezos@csusm.edu).
- Once Dr. Kezos approves and signs the forms as your 2nd nominator, it will be submitted for review by the Sigma Xi National Office.
- Anywhere from 2 weeks to a few months, students will receive an email link that will allow them to create a profile and submit payment for their membership.

- What are the membership dues & fees?
Membership dues are $70 total, which includes:
- $50 annual membership fee
- $20 one-time initiation fee
There are serveral ways these fees may be covered:
- Students may pay directly
- A research supervisor/principal investigator may use professional development or research support funds
- Students may apply for membership awards offered by OGSR and CUGR (currently inactive)
- Students may also apply for a membership award through the Sigma Xi 糖心原创 Chapter
