Campus Impact of Facility Dog
The Facility/Therapy (F/T) Dog program offers a powerful way to prioritize student
mental health and well-being. College life often brings high levels of stress that
can impact students鈥 mental health and overall well-being. F/T Dog programs have proven
effective in mitigating this stress, fostering a healthier campus environment, and
enhancing the college experience. Research shows that these programs improve student
mental health allowing students to thrive through:
- Enhanced mood, well-being, engagement, and confidence
- Reduced stress and anxiety
- Increased social interaction
- Improved coping skills, activity, and sleep
- F/T Dogs encourage social interaction, combat loneliness, support fitness routines,
and aid individuals with specific needs, such as anxiety, depression, ADHD, autism,
and PTSD. Their presence has been linked to increased production of 鈥渇eel-good鈥 hormones
like dopamine, serotonin, oxytocin, and beta-endorphins, while decreasing cortisol,
the primary stress hormone. Studies also indicate that animals in educational and
workplace settings promote trust, enhance collaboration, and contribute to a more
positive social environment. This compelling research opens doors to inter-unit campus
partnerships that create an inclusive environment designed to promote human flourishing.
