Hate Crimes

According to the , 鈥a hate crime is any offense committed against you or your property because of your race, ethnicity, religion, nationality, disability, gender or sexual orientation. Anybody can be a victim. White, heterosexual males can be victims, as can African-American women. The language of the law is very broad and protects everyone, not one particular group. To qualify as a hate crime, bias against you need not be the only reason you were attacked, as long as it was a substantial factor in the criminal鈥檚 selection of you as a target.鈥

Where should I report a hate crime?

If it is a crime in progress or an emergency, call 911 immediately or contact the University Police Department at 760-750-4567.

Where should I report a bias incident that does not amount to a crime?

Contact the Office of Inclusive Excellence or Dean of Students.

When someone commits a crime motivated by hate, it is not just an attack on one innocent person, but an attack on the entire State.
