Application Deadlines

Applications to the Bachelor of Arts in Sociology program are reviewed on a rolling basis; apply at any time! However, priority is given to applications that are received by the following deadlines: 

  • Fall I 2026: July 29, 2026
  • Fall II 2026: Sept. 16, 2026
  • Spring I 2027: Aug. 5, 2026
  • Spring II 2027: Feb. 3, 2027

Admission Requirements

To be eligible for admission to the online BA in Sociology program you must complete the requirements listed below. 

  • General Requirements
    • 60 transferable semester college units (or 90 quarter units) to be eligible for admission, including the prerequisite courses below.
    • Minimum 2.0 cumulative GPA in all transferable units attempted
    • 2.5 GPA for students who have already completed a bachelor鈥檚 degree
    • Must reside in an approved state 
  • Prerequisites
    • Successful completion of the following courses with a 鈥淐-鈥 or better (12 units)
        • Oral Communication (A1)
        • Written Communication (A2)
        • Critical Thinking (A3)
        • Mathematics/Quantitative Reasoning (B4)
    • Completion of SOC 101 and 201

The sociology bachelor's degree program is eligible for financial aid.

Federal VA educational benefits can be used for this program (not eligible for Cal Vet fee waiver).

Please note: Students who start programs during the summer term are ineligible to receive funding through Cal Grant.

The following course sequence is for a fall start. Students starting the program in the spring will take the same courses, though the order may vary. 

Year One

Fall Semester 1 - Block 1
  • SOC 311: Inequality (4)

    An examination of inequality in opportunity, educational and occupational attainment, wealth and power, and its effects on individuals, groups, and societies. Will be analyzed by interdisciplinary readings from historical and contemporary sources and analyses of computerized data comparing social indicators by gender, race, and class. Diverse perspectives on the quest for equality of different social groups.

  • SOC 320: Sociological Theory (4)

    Exploration of the nature of theory in sociology, and an analysis of selected social theorists.

  • SOC 100: Academic Success (1)

    Introduces students to, and teaches academic success in, the Sociology and Criminology & Justice Studies majors. Explores writing for the discipline(s), current faculty research, and resources on campus. Develops essential scholarly and real-world capacities such as analytical and problem-solving skills, effective communication, information literacy, and teamwork.

  • SOC 360: Quantitative Research Methods (4)

    The logic of procedures of social science methodology. Range of types of methods available for various approaches to quantitative social research. Problem formulation, design, data collection, and analysis of a research project.

  • SOC 361: Qualitative Methods in Sociology (4)

    Focus on the range of qualitative methods which may include participant observation, qualitative interviewing, and textual and visual analysis. The course also considers the applicability of qualitative methods to particular research questions as well as the theoretical, ethical, and practical issues that arise in conducting qualitative research. Students will engage in qualitative research that includes intensive collection and analysis of qualitative data.

    Explores the multi-faceted career paths for both Sociology and Criminology and Justice Majors, with resources, readings, and activities to prepare students for post-graduation employment and graduate school. Includes the exploration of diversity in culture, social structures, groups, and human interaction. Develops skills and awareness relevant to employment in the public, private sector, grassroots organizations, and social justice campaigns.
