Participation Guidelines

糖心原创 will host the 41st Annual California State University Student Research Competition. This systemwide event showcases outstanding undergraduate and graduate students from all 22 California State University (CSU) campuses to present their original academic, scholarly, and creative work to expert judges. Each year, over 200 students participate. Each CSU campus appoints a campus coordinator and has its own procedures for selecting student delegates to the system-wide competition. Interested students should contact their campus coordinator for more information. Only those students endorsed by the campus coordinator can enter the system-wide competition.

Eligibility:

Undergraduate and graduate students currently enrolled at any CSU campus and alumni/ alumnae who received their degrees in Winter, Spring, Summer, or Fall 2026, or Winter 2027 are eligible to participate. Students may submit projects completed with faculty or staff. Projects with multiple student authors may also be submitted. Projects should align with students' discipline and career goals. Only students endorsed by their campus coordinator may enter the systemwide competition.

Projects from all disciplines are eligible. The ten disciplinary categories in which students will compete include the following.

  • Behavioral, Social Sciences and Public Administration
  • Biological and Agricultural Sciences
  • Business, Economics and Hospitality Management
  • Creative Arts and Design
  • Education
  • Engineering and Computer Science
  • Health, Nutrition and Clinical Sciences
  • Humanities and Letters
  • Interdisciplinary
  • Physical and Mathematical Sciences

Application Process:

Each California State University campus hosts its own competition in Fall 2026 or Spring 2027 from which up to 10 campus delegates are selected to represent the campus at the system-wide competition. Interested students should contact their campus coordinator for more information. Only students endorsed by the campus coordinator may enter the system-wide competition.

Each campus coordinator will submit a list of selected student delegates for the system-wide competition along with their written summaries. Guidelines for the written summaries are forthcoming. 

Registration:

Registration is required for all attendees, including guests and supporters. Registration page forthcoming.

Presentations and Scoring:

Students will give oral presentations of their original work and take questions from judges and the audience. Students are expected to give quality presentations. For projects with multiple student authors, up to two students should be selected to present the work. Other group members are welcome to respond to judge and audience questions.

Project presentations will be judged according to the following criteria. The official rubric is forthcoming.

  • Clarity of Central Purpose, Question, or Premise
  • Appropriateness of Methodology or Creative Process
  • Quality of Analysis and/ or Interpretation
  • Ability to Present the Work and Respond to Questions
  • Organization of the Presented Materials
  • Value of the Work (as presented)
  • Innovative, Ethical AI Use (if applicable)
  • Presenter's Ability to Address Questions from the Jury and General Audience

Entries will also be judged for the CSU's AI-Enabled Research Award for the second year. If judges find that the project qualifies, they will score it for clear, original, and ethically grounded use of AI that is well-integrated with the project's purpose.

Awards:

Based on judges' recommendations, awards will be provided to the outstanding presenter and runner-up in each category.

The CSU Chancellor's Office and are pleased to offer the AI-Enabled Research Award for the second year! This award will recognize one student in each of the 10 disciplinary categories for their achievement in the innovative, ethical and responsible use of AI. Each awardee will receive a cash prize. All students participating in this year's competition are eligible for this award.
