Using a Class Team in Microsoft Teams

Creating a class team within Microsoft Teams can allows you to share resources, communicate with your students, and even collect assignment submissions outside of your Canvas course. 

Step 1: Creating a Class in Teams

Class teams have unique permissions and features for instructors and students. As owners of the team, instructors assign work, share class content, start meetings, and control who can post in the team. Each class team is also linked to its own OneNote Class Notebook. 

Creating class from within Canvas

  1. Within your course in Canvas, click on Microsoft Education on your course navigation.
  2. Click "Continue setup" near the bottom.

  3. Click Teams to toggle it on.

  4. Click Create.

  5. Click Done.

  6. The course will be set up, which may take a few minutes.

  7. Once your class team has been created, you can access the class team from both within Canvas and if Canvas is not available.
    From within Canvas:
      1. click on Microsoft Education on your course navigation.
      2. Click on Teams at the top of the page.
      3. Click "Open" on class team card.

Creating class from outside of Canvas

Only use this method if Canvas is unavailable or you want to create assignments (keep in mind grades from assignments do not sync with Canvas).

Step 2 (if needed): Adding Students

If you created your class team from within Canvas, you do not need to manually add students. You only need to manually add students if you created your class team outside of Canvas.

Step 3: Communicating

Class connections can now go much further beyond the walls of a classroom with meetings, chats, and channel posts in class teams.

If you will be communicating through your class team, we recommend you send your students this

Step 4: Sharing Course Resources

Effective file sharing and management are crucial for distant learning and online education in virtual classrooms. With a class team, instructors can easily exchange resources with one another, giving students convenient access to key content throughout their e-learning experience.

Step 5: Creating Assignments

If you created your class team from within Canvas, at this time you cannot create assignments within your class team.

If you created your class team outside of Canvas, you can create assignments for your students in your class team, manage assignment timelines, add instructions, create resources to turn in, and more.

Be advised: Grades from assignments built in Teams do not sync to the Canvas gradebook.
